Portsmouth was preparing to ship Virgin Voyage’s massive luxury liner Scarlet Lady …

The free spared ship is also being designed by acclaimed designer Tom Dixon to ensure it dazzles in and out of Portsmouth.

She arrives in Portsmouth to prepare for the company’s first commercial passenger trips.

Starting August 6th, Scarlet Lady will operate at reduced capacity for three weeks to make at least six trips of either three or four nights around England.

Councilor Gerald Vernon-Jackson, chairman of Portsmouth City Council, previously said it could pump millions of pounds into the island’s economy.

“People will start and end their cruises here, which means that people will get on and off so that when people get off their cruise they will visit the city,” he said.

“It means a lot of jobs potentially worth a million pounds to the city every time there is a cruise here that Southampton supposedly deserves every time.”

Mike Sellers, director of Portsmouth International Port, said the luxury liner’s visit was “fantastic news for the city and the travel industry at large”.

“It will be a spectacle like no other when the unmistakable Scarlet Lady sails through the spectacular harbor entrance. We can be sure that the sailors and crew will experience a warm welcome in Portsmouth,” he added.

“It is a great opportunity for the city to be the home port of Scarlet Lady this summer and we are delighted to be partnering with global brand Virgin Voyages on their flagship voyages.

“The future won’t wait and we are confident that a domestic cruise can take place following the government announcement and there is an appetite to explore again.”

Sir Richard Branson, Founder of Virgin, added: ‘Virgin Voyages has looked forward to sailing and we are very excited to announce our plans to depart the UK.

“Our team put together such a fantastic experience for our sailors and they know this is a vacation they will love.”
