In other news, the outstanding debt of state-owned power company Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited (TANGEDCO) increased to Rs India announced on Tuesday. Debt increased due to partial debt assumption, failure to convert 25 percent of debt into bonds, and increases in borrowing for the power generation project by 87.05 percent and working capital by 189.88 percent over the five years to 2019-20 , according to a CAG report .
Crimes against women and children in Tamil Nadu have increased significantly in 2021 compared to previous years, data presented by the state government at the assembly on Monday shows. The data, presented during the Home Office grant application, showed a total of 2,421 crimes against women in 2021, including 442 cases of rape, 27 cases of dowry death, 875 cases of cruelty by the husband and his relatives, and 1,077 cases of Harassment.
In 2019, a total of 1,982 crimes against women were registered, in 2020 there were 2,025. It should be noted that the number of cases of harassment has increased every year. From 803 in 2019, it rose to 892 in 2020 and 1,077 in 2021.
Puducherry’s Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (Jipmer) was at the center of controversy Monday (May 9) when the DMK, part of the c-led opposition in the Union Territory, organized a massive protest. The protest came against a recent circular from the prestigious hospital, which insisted that staff use Hindi in official communications. Over 500 DMK workers, including four MLAs, were arrested in the protest against the circular’s withdrawal.
More than 100 families are in fear at Buckingham Canal in Raja Annamalai Puram in Chennai due to the state government’s eviction campaign. Earlier, a man had set himself on fire to resist the eviction movement. The eviction began on April 29 after officials from the Water Resource Department (WRD) and the Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board (TNUHDB), with the support of the police, demolished the buildings.
