Sparkling opening day for the TF35 final –

As if Scarlino was bringing the teams into the final decision of the first TF35 season, Scarlino delivered a warm sea breeze between 6 and 11 knots, flat water and blue skies on the glittering Tuscan coast on the opening day of the race.

“The conditions were perfect, good wind, great sun, fantastic races,” said Zoulou’s owner Erik Marris at the dock. “The competition is intense; Some of the teams seem to have found the grove better than others. I’m not sure we’re in that category, but we work hard and enjoy it. “

After two training starts and two training races, the fleet leader Realteam Sailing continued as usual, who shot out of the starting blocks and clinched two victories in the first two official races.

In contrast, Ernesto Bertarell’s Alinghi, closest rival, slowly warmed up, started the day third, finished second in race two and ended the day with a win.

The two teams were inseparable throughout the season in terms of speed, maneuvers and boat handling. The only way to put points above the other is if a mistake is made – and that was the case with Realteam Sailing in the third race.

Slowing the start Realteam Sailing of Esteban Garcia, co-skipper of Jérôme Clerc, saw the fleet accelerate. Alinghi led the attack, closely followed by Spindrift, Team Sailever and Zoulou. In fifth place, Clerc left the fleet early in the first stroke in search of clear air and a bit of luck on the other side of the racetrack, but could not recover and finished the race in fifth place. A costly result for the opening day of the last Grand Prix, when Realteam Sailing and Alinghi were only separated by two points in the overall result.

The outstanding team for today was undoubtedly Dona Bertarelli and Yann Guichards Spindrift. During yesterday’s training session, the team suffered a broken foil flap. After a heroic effort by the land crew François Guiffant and Hugo Pronost and the help of the sailors, the flap was rebuilt overnight.

“When we left the dock, we tried to forget about the breakdown and concentrate on our goal – to get the boat moving as quickly as possible,” explains tactician Yann Jauvin. “We got off to a good start in race one, it went well with Realteam and Alinghi and we managed to place ourselves between them and finish second.”

In the second race, the Guichard team struggled with the headwind speed, but was able to hold fourth place. A return to form in the third race brought the Swiss team cone to second place; this time between Alinghi and Team Sailever.

On the second day of the TF35 finals in Scarlino, the race is scheduled to start an hour earlier at 11:00 a.m. CEST, as the conditions and intensity increase due to the expected wind strength.
