Guwahati: To give a big boost to river tourism development in Assam, a new luxury river cruise service is scheduled to start between Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh and Dibrugarh in Assam via Kolkata and Indo-Bangladesh protocol route.

To achieve this, a Memorandum of Understanding between the Inland Waterways Authority of India and Antara Luxury River Cruises and JM Baxi River Cruises was signed during the International Cruise Conference 2022 in Mumbai.

Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways and Ayush, Sarbananda Sonowal, and Union Minister for Tourism, Culture and Development of the Northeastern Region (DONER), Gangapuram Kisan Reddy, were present at the historic event where eight major memoranda of understanding were signed, to boost river cruise tourism in the country.

Of these, two MoUs have been signed by the Inland Waterways Authority of India or IWAI with Antara Luxury River Cruises and JM Baxi River Cruises to launch a river cruise service between Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh and Bogibeel in Dibrugarh, Assam.

It is worth mentioning here that the Government of India has allocated Rs 648.80 million for the development of ten Coastal Thematic Circuits projects.
