Malaysian tycoon Lim Kok Thay, former head of now-bankrupt Chinese company Genting Hong Kong, has announced the launch of a new cruise line called Resorts World Cruises as an extension of its global hotel-casino brand Resorts World.
In a recent press releaseCelebrating the new line as “a new Asian luxury and dynamic lifestyle cruise brand”, the newly formed Resorts World Cruises announced that it will make its debut on June 15, 2022 with a former Singapore-based Dream Cruises ship, the Genting dream.

Genting subsidiaries Crystal Cruises, Star Cruises and Dream Cruises also went under in early 2022 when the company filed for bankruptcy after two of its ships were impounded over unpaid fuel bills and it had already run out of money to reimburse customers for cruises that due to the pandemic.
Corresponding Travel weekly, the Genting Dream with 18 decks and 150,695 gross register tons was already delivered to Dream Cruises in 2016 and can accommodate 3,352 guests with double occupancy. According to the new cruise line’s official release, the ship has a “generous tonnage ratio of 45 gross tons per passenger,” making it “Asia’s most spacious ship.”
Despite the collapse of Genting Hong Kong in the pandemic era, the Resorts World hotel brand – which Lim also controls – remains “a global brand with 46 hotels in 8 countries on 4 continents, welcoming over 80 million visitors annually and served by more than 30,000 employees,” the press release said. With that, the Malaysian billionaire appears to be resurrecting his former cruise business from the ashes.
“We began our cruise operations in Singapore 30 years ago and are excited to launch the first Resorts World Cruises again in Singapore, the first country to reopen cruises in the region,” said Tan Sri KT Lim, Executive Chairman of Resorts World Cruises . “Resorts World Cruises will be headquartered in Singapore and is committed to making Singapore the premier cruise hub in Asia.” He continued, “We also appreciate the support and trust of Chinese leasing banks in making it possible for Resorts World Cruises to charter the Genting Dream.”
In its release, the new line said Resorts World Cruises will be issuing complimentary cruise credits to passengers affected by the cancellation of World Dream voyages (another Dream Cruises ship) are affected between March 2 and August 31, 2022 for the amount of their canceled cruise.
