The people of the Mogholhat union in Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila are saddened by the authorities’ failure to complete the bridge over the Ratnai River for a long time.
If the construction works are incomplete, they will suffer from the coming monsoon, it said.
Locals say circumstances are not changing due to the negligence of authorities and the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) contractor.
Quader Ali, a 60-year-old farmer from Megharam village, said: “The LGED engineer comes and assures us that the bridge will be completed this month, then the next, but even after years, the bridge remains incomplete,” he said.
Monindra Nath Roy (65), a farmer from Durakuti village, repeated the same thing. “We’ve heard for the last six and a half years that the bridge would be ready soon, but it’s still under construction.”
Mogholhat UP leader Habibur Rahman told The Daily Star that work to complete the road connecting the bridge is now being delayed.
Although three senior engineers have been transferred from LGED, the bridge has not yet been commissioned, he said.
Contacted Manjur Quader Elahi, executive engineer of Lalmonirhat LGED, said that the construction of the 120 meter long and eight meter wide bridge started in September 2016 at a cost of Tk 6.20 crore. A contract to complete the bridge by May 2018 has been signed.
The contractor has missed 10 deadlines so far, he said.
“Construction of the main infrastructure of the bridge was completed in November 2021,” he said.
“We are trying to build a connecting road to finish the bridge work before the monsoon,” he said.
