To celebrate its 150th anniversary, Holland America Line has planned two special voyages. As the April 18, 2023 date approaches, the cruise line is adding a second commemorative transatlantic crossing aboard Rotterdam to the schedule of celebrations.
“As we got more involved in planning the events surrounding our 150th, we knew the best place to celebrate our founding date was the city of Rotterdam, where it all began,” said Gus Antorcha, President of Holland AmericaLine. “These voyages, marking our first sailing and anniversary, will be incredibly memorable as we trace our first voyage back to the 1870s but on a modern, luxury cruise ship. We expect the April cruise to be as popular as the October cruise.”
The first special 150th anniversary crossing will be Departs Rotterdam on October 15, 2022, exactly 150 years after the date of the departure of Rotterdam I’s maiden voyage. This crossing will replicate the first sailing to go from Rotterdam to New York, calling at Plymouth and Dover, then on to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The ship will be staying in New York for special celebrations.
The second will depart Fort Lauderdale on April 3, 2023. The 16-night itinerary travels to Rotterdam and the Netherlands, retracing the company’s first voyage in reverse order.
Departing Fort Lauderdale, the ship sails to New York City and makes a rare overnight stop, giving guests additional time to experience the attractions that bring the Big Apple to life, including the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, the Empire State Building , Broadway and so on much more.
Rotterdam will then spend eight days at sea, crossing the Atlantic and calling at Plymouth and Dover (London), England, before arriving in Rotterdam for a night of celebrations on its anniversary day, April 18.
While certain details of the celebrations will be kept secret, there will be special commemorative experiences during the crossings. There will be historical menus and cocktails giving guests a taste of the brand’s history, live music with special performances by guest artists, presentations reliving Holland America Line’s history and roots, and an Olympic-style event featuring sporting activities and games for class cruises.
Holland America will begin its 150th anniversary year with a memorable stage performance aboard Rotterdam when the ship overnights in New York City on October 26, 2022.
When the ship arrives in Rotterdam in the Netherlands on April 18, 2023 for its 150th birthday, it will be given a celebratory welcome! During the night call, guests and the city of Rotterdam will honor this historic milestone with an evening event on board.
Specially designed limited edition 150th anniversary retail items will also be available in onboard stores.
Rotterdam is Holland America’s newest ship. On May 30, 2022, the city of Rotterdam officially welcomed her as the flagship of the fleet. Following a tradition that began in the 1920s, Her Royal Highness Princess Margriet of the Netherlands christened the ship in a ceremony attended by local dignitaries and invited guests.
She is the third ship in the Pinnacle Class series and the seventh ship to bear the Holland America Line name. Rotterdam carries 2,668 guests, is 300 meters long and 114.8 meters wide. There are 1,340 cabins in total, including 912 balcony cabins, 164 suites, 748 balcony cabins, 147 sea-view cabins and 280 inside cabins.
It features an exclusive collection of nightly world-class performances, specialty restaurants and 270 degree LED projection on the World Stage with panoramic visual and sound effects.
Following the celebratory anniversary cruise, the ship will spend the season in the Caribbean, sailing tropical itineraries out of Fort Lauderdale.
