Travel lovers are eager to get moving again, and there’s one place that’s definitely seeing the results of Canadians’ pent-up demand: the US
A popular destination even before the pandemic, get data from Yahoo Canada the last full week has shown that Expedia saw a 10 percent increase in flight searches specifically to Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Honolulu and San Francisco.
“It’s been a long two years and there is extraordinary pent-up demand,” Christopher Heywood, Executive Vice President of Global Communications at New York & company told Yahoo Canada on the phone when he saw a double-decker bus full of tourists pass his window.
“Not only have people missed their opportunity to travel to the greatest city on earth, New York City, they also have a love affair with her.”
“New York City is one of the few places where you can literally travel around the world without leaving the five boroughs. So it really is the ultimate multicultural international experience. One of the things we’ve done during the pandemic is that we’ve doubled down to highlight different experiences that really give people a better sense of what New York City has to offer.”
Two long years have passed and there is an extraordinary amount of catching up to do.
As travel resumes, sustainability-focused travel is also a priority for visitors, including those traveling to New York City.
“I think people are more sustainable, they want to make a positive impact on the place that they visit,” Heywood said. “I definitely think visitors are looking for destinations that are committed to sustainability.”
“I think to be able to support the local economy, to be able to help small businesses and to be able to support the livelihoods that come with that, I think [also] so important.”
Hotel development in New York is also on the rise, with plans to expand from 118,000 rooms to 130,000 rooms over the next few years, allowing the city to be even better prepared for rising visitor numbers.
