CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (KTRK) — A Lancha boat crew was stopped and seized from 40 sharks illegally caught in federal waters off South Texas, according to the Coast Guard.

On Tuesday, officials responded to a report of four fishermen fishing illegally aboard a lancha boat about seven miles north of the ocean line.

The crew of the Coast Guard cutter, Edgar Culbertson, said they launched a 26-foot-over-the-horizon cutterboat crew and seized illegal fishing gear, and 40 sharks were found aboard the Lancha.

Coast Guard officials reportedly arrested the four fishermen and handed them over to border guards for further processing.

A lancha is a fishing boat used by Mexican fishermen and is around 20 to 30 feet long with a slim profile. It has an outboard motor and can cruise at speeds in excess of 30 miles per hour.

Lanchas are commonly used to ship illegal drugs into the United States and to fish illegally in the United States Exclusive Economic Zone near the US-Mexico border in the Gulf of Mexico.
