Five crews have appeared back-to-back in the history of the prestigious Southern 80 ski race — superman will aim to make it six.

superman broke through on his 14th attempt at the overall win in the 2020 race, running the distance in 31:06.

Now Darren McGuire (driver), Steven Robertson (observer) and ski duo Daniel Graziano and Daniel Cotton are back to contend for the title again, coming in on the back of a record-breaking entry.

After starting the season with a broken ski rope at the Murray Darling 110, the crew clinched a record-breaking victory at the Robinvale Euston 80 and set a new course record with a time of 26:17 – four seconds faster than Merc Force in 2018.

Another overall win at the Mildura 100 has superman fly into the last race of the ski season.

But despite being one of the frontrunners for the Southern 80, McGuire doesn’t believe in a favorite tag.

“There’s a lot of people in the race who live in Echuca who know every corner and know it a lot better than I do,” McGuire said.

“We have sapphire, pigs (arsenal), mistress, Wildly determinedall the guys from down here are going to be hard to beat.

“They know the river like the back of their hand – I only ride it once a year.”

For the crew, it is now a matter of which of their two boats gets the honor of being the 80th

“We’re coming down with the blue boat and if we think that’s good enough we’ll drive it,” McGuire said.

“The blue boat, the old one Arkham Boot, was in pretty good shape to win the Southern 80, so let’s hope it will be better than Black Boot down there.

“Right now we just don’t know – the black boat was that good.”

superman remains in contention for the King of the Murray, the last boat in the field that can crack the necessary 65 points.

But after a two-year absence from the big race, McGuire and his crew are just happy to be back.

“It will just be the usual great race, I don’t think it will be any different,” he said.
