Kia Telluride

With seating for up to eight passengers (and seven on higher trim levels), the 2022 Kia Telluride has plenty of room for passengers and cargo. It offers a wide range of trims, from classic mainstream to budget-friendly near-luxury. The Telluride was so good it won both our Best Buy and Best 3-Row Midsize SUV awards last year. For 2022 it gets a larger standard 10.25-inch infotainment screen with standard navigation. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are still standard.

The driving behavior is comfortable and agile for the large SUV, the standard adaptive cruise control with highway driving assistant makes long journeys easy to manage. The system reads traffic signs and adjusts the speed if necessary. If you need to drive a little off-road, the Telluride can handle it thanks to its 8-inch ground clearance and available AWD system.

There is plenty of room inside for adults (even in the third row). The seats are easily accessible whether you have the captain’s chairs or the standard second-row bench seat, and the seats are stacked stadium-style so everyone in the back can see the road ahead. This year Driver Talk is standard, meaning you don’t have to yell to be heard in the back rows. A sleep mode also turns off the rear speakers when kids are asleep.

In addition, the Telluride has an impressive array of standard safety systems. These include front collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go. Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Driver Attention Alert, Rear Occupant Alert and Safe Exit Assist are also included.

Ford Explorer

If the 2022 Ford Explorer offers one thing, it’s variety. Three powertrain options include a powerful turbocharged 4-cylinder, a 400hp twin-turbocharged V6 and a hybrid V6. Equipment options are equally extensive, with options for second-row Captain’s Chairs (reducing seating capacity to six), an all-terrain Timberline version, and the luxurious and expensive Platinum trim.

While the Telluride can accommodate up to eight passengers, the Explorer has a maximum of seven seats. As is usual with mid-size SUVs, the third row is best suited for smaller children due to the relatively narrow legroom. The cabin is comfortable and quiet, although neither the exterior nor the interior design are terribly exciting. Upper trim adds details like red stitching, simulated suede, and of course full grain leather in the King Ranch and Platinum upper trim.

Even the base turbocharged 4-cylinder is good at 300bhp and offers plenty to keep the Explorer moving, but the twin-turbocharged V6 in the ST is the one people will be talking about. It’s fast and powerful, with a sport-tuned chassis, optional 21-inch alloy wheels and more powerful brakes. A Timberline version has off-road tires, standard four-wheel drive, limited-slip rear differential, increased suspension and skid plates.

Standard features include keyless ignition, tri-zone climate control and an 8-way power driver’s seat, along with the Co-Pilot360 suite of driver assistance features. Infotainment is via an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB ports, satellite radio and a 6-speaker audio system. Higher trims add more luxury, but prices can climb to nearly $60,000.
